Wintergreen's ski operation features 24 trails and 6 lifts across a 1,003-foot vertical drop. No, it's not Vail. But for a ski experience within a day's drive of Central Virginia, DC, and Richmond, it's outstanding. The resort invests heavily in snowmaking, covering 100% of terrain, which means consistent conditions even when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate. Night skiing is available on select trails, and the tubing park is a huge draw for families.

Stoney Creek Golf Course, designed by Rees Jones, offers 27 holes of championship golf set against mountain backdrops that make it hard to focus on your swing.   • Devils Backbone Brewing Company: Founded in Roseland in 2008, Devils Backbone grew from a small farmhouse brewery to one of the most decorated craft breweries in America before its acquisition by Anheuser-Busch. The Basecamp Brewpub in Roseland remains a destination, with outstanding food, a massive outdoor beer garden, and a rotating selection of small-batch brews. Their Vienna Lager is one of the best-selling craft beers in the Mid-Atlantic.
  • Blue Mountain Brewery: Another Nelson County original, perched on a hillside in Afton with stunning mountain views from the outdoor deck. Their Full Nelson Virginia Pale Ale is a classic.
  • Wild Wolf Brewing Company: Located in Nellysford in a converted schoolhouse, Wild Wolf combines craft beer with a full restaurant menu in a family-friendly setting.
  • Bold Rock Cidery: One of the largest craft cideries in the country, Bold Rock's tasting room in Nellysford is always lively.
  • Wineries: Nelson County is home to roughly 10 wineries, including Veritas Vineyard, Afton Mountain Vineyards, Flying Fox Vineyard, and Cardinal Point Winery. The Nelson 151 wine trail along Route 151 is a popular weekend excursion from Charlottesville and Richmond.

Natural Wonders

Crabtree Falls is Nelson County's crown jewel of natural beauty. This cascading waterfall drops approximately 70 feet in its longest single cascade, with the total series of falls spanning over 1,200 feet of elevation change along a moderately strenuous 1.7-mile trail. It's the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River and draws visitors year-round. The trailhead is well-maintained with parking, restrooms, and interpretive signage.

Blue Ridge Tunnel (Claudius Crozet Tunnel) is a more recent addition to Nelson County's attractions. This 4,273-foot railroad tunnel, completed in 1858 by enslaved and immigrant laborers, was an engineering marvel of its era. Reopened as a walking and cycling trail in 2020, it's a haunting and beautiful experience to walk through the mountain on a path carved over 160 years ago. The tunnel maintains a constant temperature of about 50 degrees, making it a refreshing summer walk and a fascinating year-round destination.

The Appalachian Trail crosses through Nelson County near the Priest and Three Ridges Wilderness areas, offering some of the most challenging and rewarding hiking on the entire AT in Virginia. The Three Ridges loop is a bucket-list hike for serious backpackers.

Lovingston and Nellysford

Lovingston, the county seat, is a small village with a courthouse, a few shops, and an authenticity that can't be manufactured. Nellysford, located along Route 151, has become the commercial hub of the county's brewery and winery scene. Between Devils Backbone, Wild Wolf, Bold Rock, and the various farm stands and shops along 151, Nellysford has developed a genuine tourism economy without losing its rural character.

Who Buys in Nelson County?

The Nelson County buyer tends to fall into a few categories:

  • Weekend warriors from DC and Richmond: Nelson County is about 2.5 hours from DC and 1.5 hours from Richmond, making it an easy weekend escape. Many own condos at Wintergreen or small cabins in the valley.
  • Retirees seeking mountain living: The combination of natural beauty, low property taxes, proximity to Charlottesville's medical and cultural amenities (UVA Medical Center is 45 minutes away), and a strong sense of community makes Nelson County a popular retirement destination.
  • Remote workers: Reliable internet has come to much of Nelson County through fiber and fixed wireless providers, making it feasible to live full-time in the mountains while working for companies in DC, Richmond, or anywhere.
  • Investors: The short-term rental market at Wintergreen and along the Route 151 corridor is strong and growing.

Living in Nelson County Full-Time

I want to be upfront about the trade-offs of full-time Nelson County living. This is a rural county. The nearest Walmart is in Waynesboro (30 minutes). Medical specialists require a drive to Charlottesville or Lynchburg. Snow and ice can make mountain roads challenging in winter (Wintergreen's roads are well-maintained, but county roads vary). Cell service can be spotty in the valleys.

But for people who've chosen this life, those trade-offs are features, not bugs. The quiet, the dark skies, the absence of strip malls and traffic, the feeling of being embedded in the natural world - these are the things that make Nelson County irreplaceable.
