Central Virginia School Districts Ranked: A Home Buyer's Guide

A county-by-county breakdown of Central Virginia school districts, test scores, programs, and which neighborhoods feed into top-rated schools.

Central Virginia School Districts Ranked: A Home Buyer's Guide

When families relocate to Central Virginia, schools are almost always in the top three factors driving their home search. I hear it every week: "We want a great school district, a manageable commute, and a home we can afford." The good news is that Central Virginia can deliver all three in ways that metro areas simply cannot.

This guide breaks down the major school districts in our region, highlights standout schools, and connects them to the neighborhoods and communities where you'd be buying. Because choosing a home and choosing a school district are really the same decision.

Bedford County Public Schools

Bedford County consistently ranks among the top school districts in our region, which is a major reason why Forest and the surrounding communities are so popular with families.

Key Schools

  • Jefferson Forest High School: The crown jewel of Bedford County's system. Located in Forest, JFHS serves the northern part of the county and consistently earns high marks for academics, athletics, and college preparation. Dual-enrollment courses through Central Virginia Community College allow students to earn college credit before graduation.
  • Staunton River High School: Serving the southern part of the county, including Moneta and the SML area. Strong vocational and technical programs alongside traditional academics.
  • Liberty High School: Located near the town of Bedford, with a comprehensive curriculum and growing STEM offerings.
  • Forest Middle School: Feeds into Jefferson Forest High, located along Route 221 in the heart of the Forest community.

Where to Buy

For the Jefferson Forest district: Forest proper (along Route 221), Goode, and the new subdivisions off Vista Park Drive and Thomas Jefferson Road. Median prices: $330,000-$340,000. For Staunton River: Moneta, Hardy, and Huddleston. Prices vary widely from $200,000 for inland properties to $800,000+ for lakefront.

Notable Programs

  • The Bedford County Technical Center offers career and technical education (CTE) programs in health sciences, IT, welding, and more.
  • Governor's School participation for advanced students.
  • Strong athletics programs, particularly in football, basketball, and track.

Campbell County Public Schools

Campbell County's schools serve approximately 8,000 students and offer solid educational options at the region's most affordable home prices.

Key Schools

  • Brookville High School: The largest high school in the system, serving the northern corridor closest to Lynchburg. Strong dual-enrollment program and competitive athletics.
  • William Campbell Combined School: A middle/high school serving the southern part of the county, with a close-knit community feel.
  • Altavista Combined School: Serving the town of Altavista with dedicated staff and small class sizes.

Where to Buy

For the Brookville district: the Route 501 corridor north of Rustburg, Timberlake area, and Long Meadows. Median prices: $220,000-$230,000. This is where the best value-to-school-quality ratio in the region lives.

Notable Programs

  • Central Virginia Community College dual-enrollment partnerships.
  • Career and technical education programs.
  • Smaller class sizes compared to metro districts, which many families view as an advantage.

Amherst County Public Schools

Amherst County operates a smaller system serving about 4,000 students, with one high school that serves the entire county.

Key Schools

  • Amherst County High School: The county's sole high school, offering a comprehensive curriculum including AP courses, dual enrollment, and CTE programs. The single-school model means every student in the county attends together, creating strong community bonds.
  • Amherst Middle School: Grades 6-8, centrally located.
  • Elementary Schools: Amherst Elementary, Monelison, Temperance, and Amelon serve different geographic areas of the county.

Where to Buy

Madison Heights for the shortest commute to Lynchburg. The town of Amherst for walkability to schools. Monroe and Elon for acreage and mountain views. Median: $270,000-$280,000.

Franklin County Public Schools

Franklin County's system serves students across a large geographic area, from the SML shoreline to the rural southern reaches of the county.

Key Schools

  • Franklin County High School: A large, comprehensive high school in Rocky Mount with strong academics and athletics. The school has invested significantly in STEM and career readiness programs.
  • Benjamin Franklin Middle School: Feeds into FCHS with a transitional program that prepares students for high school academics.
  • Elementary Schools: Burnt Chimney, Glade Hill, Boones Mill, Sontag, and others serve the county's diverse geography.

Where to Buy

Westlake and the SML south shore communities for lake access within the Franklin County school district. Rocky Mount for the most affordable prices. Boones Mill for a small-town feel with Route 220 access. Median: $320,000-$330,000.

Lynchburg City Schools

As an independent city, Lynchburg operates its own school system separate from the surrounding counties.

Key Schools

  • E.C. Glass High School: One of the oldest public high schools in Virginia, located in the historic Rivermont area. E.C. Glass has a strong academic tradition and recently completed significant facility upgrades. The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme is a standout offering.
  • Heritage High School: Serves the western and southern parts of the city with comprehensive academic and CTE programs.
  • Linkhorne Middle School and Sandusky Middle School: Feed into the two high schools.

Where to Buy

For E.C. Glass: Rivermont Avenue, Boonsboro, and the neighborhoods along Memorial Avenue. For Heritage: Wyndhurst, Timberlake Road corridor, and the south Lynchburg neighborhoods. City homes tend to be priced between county ranges, with historic homes on Rivermont commanding premiums for their architecture and character.

Private School Options

Central Virginia has several well-regarded private schools that draw students from across the region:

  • Virginia Episcopal School (VES): A prestigious boarding and day school in Lynchburg with a beautiful campus and strong college placement record. Grades 9-12.
  • New Covenant Schools: A classical Christian school in Lynchburg offering K-12 education with a rigorous liberal arts curriculum.
  • Liberty Christian Academy: Associated with Liberty University, offering K-12 education with a Christian worldview and strong athletics.
  • Timberlake Christian Schools: PreK-12 in the Timberlake area of Lynchburg.
  • Temple Christian School: Serving families in the Madison Heights/Amherst area.

Private school families have more flexibility in where they buy, since they're not tied to a specific public school district. This can open up value opportunities in counties where public school ratings might be lower but home prices are significantly more affordable.

Home School Community

Central Virginia has one of the most active and well-organized homeschool communities in the state. Groups like the Lynchburg Area Home Educators (LAHE) offer co-ops, field trips, sports leagues, and social events. Virginia's homeschool laws are among the most flexible in the nation, and several local facilities offer classes specifically for homeschool students.

How School Districts Affect Home Values

The data is clear: school district quality directly impacts home prices. In our market, the premium looks like this:

  • Bedford County (Jefferson Forest zone) commands a 15-20% premium over comparable homes in Campbell County, driven largely by school reputation.
  • Lynchburg's E.C. Glass zone homes carry a premium within the city, particularly the historic Rivermont and Boonsboro neighborhoods.
  • Homes in Franklin County's SML-area school zones benefit from both school quality and lake proximity.

For buyers, this means weighing an important trade-off: do you pay more upfront for a top-rated school district, or buy for value in a more affordable district and invest the savings in private education or supplemental programs? Both strategies work, and the right answer depends on your family's priorities and budget.

My Advice to Families

  1. Visit the schools. Ratings and test scores tell part of the story, but walking the halls, meeting teachers, and seeing the facilities tells the rest. Most Central Virginia schools are welcoming to prospective families.
  2. Talk to current parents. I can connect you with families in any district who are happy to share their experience.
  3. Consider the full picture. A slightly lower-rated school with smaller class sizes, involved parents, and a strong community may serve your child better than a higher-rated school where they're a number.
  4. Think about the commute. A great school 35 minutes away means 70 minutes of daily driving. Factor that into your quality of life calculation.
  5. Look at trajectory, not just current ratings. Districts that are investing in facilities, hiring quality teachers, and growing enrollment are often undervalued by the market.

Central Virginia's school options are one of the region's genuine strengths. Whether you're drawn to Bedford County's top-rated public schools, Lynchburg's IB program, a private school like Virginia Episcopal, or the freedom of homeschooling, you can find the right educational fit here while still affording the home and lifestyle that brought you to the region in the first place.
